![]() ![]() ![]() One of my favorite older songs is Kann Pona Pokkile… from Panam Padaithavan for its strong message couched in simple, elegant words. I distinctly remember the moment when I started looking upon Vaali as a great lyricist. That made the latter’s songs seem more accessible. Vairamuthu’s lyrics were more poetic and regularly used uncommon versions for some common words while Vaali’s lyrics were more down-to-earth, employing familiar, common words to convey strong emotions. Borrowing a popular distinction that is used for actors and movies, I’ve always felt that Vairamuthu was for the classes while Vaali was for the masses. Vaali and Vairamuthu were the two lyricists who have been dominating the Tamil music scene for as long as I remember. ![]() But I knew him mainly as a prolific, versatile lyricist whose words turned several songs into timeless classics. I learned from Wikipedia that he worked briefly in All India Radio, directed plays, authored several biographies and an autobiography and was honored with the Padmashri. Lyricist Vaali passed away last Thursday. ![]()
